I think it was like an older Ghibli that shared the same body. 1989-96, 3.2 twin turbo V8.

This and the Ghibli II are the cars I use when people rag on the Biturbo. The Shamal uses the same base structure as the 80s cras (albeit galvanised), and the Ghibli uses the base structure and the base engine.

Neither of which are slouches at all. Badass cars.

If I was to build a car to do time attack/ Gatebil type things I'd pick a Shamal (replete with 4.7l GranTurismo V8 with twin turbos).

Of course...all the cool cars I want I can't have where I live even if I had the monies. I should have been born in Europe.

Good find! With the wide haunches, it looks a bit like a Italian Nissan R32 GT-R.

Older than the Ghibli II, and much rarer. It was a limited production special placed above all the Biturbos. Styling was by Marcello Gandini (check out the signature rear wheelarch shape similar to the original Countach). That little feature above the wipers is indeed a "wing" of sorts.

I love it.

Twin Turbo V-8, you say??? So much want. It's like an Italian M3 (e30)

There is so much that is so wrong with how this car looks. Yet it ends up being pure sex. The headlights, the cowl intake(?), the B pillar, the trunk gap... Just wrong, every bit of it. Yet words can't express the amount of want I have for this car that I've just seen for the first time.

Different body, although some of the design details were carried over to the Ghibli. The Shamal is far more exclusive and unique.

Everything below the window on the side remind me an awful lot of my Celica. The line below the beltline is near-identical as is the shape of the box fenders (with the exception being that they are a bit wider on this car). In other words this is pure sex because I absolutely love those lines on my car!

likely a laminar airfoil.

Sort of a wing... but close to the body, and designed to keep airflow organized, and 'attached' to the body, rather than cavitating and causing air turbulence.

It likely keeps airflow over the hood organized, and directed cleanly over the windshield, in an effort to keep the airflow clean over the roof. It probably also serves to shield the windshield wipers from airflow and creating turbulence, when they are stowed.

Otherwise, it is a form of cowl scoop, that directs airflow into the cowl for either interior climate control, or possibly an engine air intake source, if the aircleaners draw from the back of the engine bay, near the cowl.

Not really designed for significant lift, or inverse lift... just airflow management.

That is one of the many reasons I would love to visit Japan someday. Say, pardon my ignorance, but how is the food safety situation since the earthquake/power-plant disaster? I hear all kinds of things but would like to know the scoop from inside.

Well they stopped food production in certain areas near there, the good thing is many farms use greenhouses here. A lot of food comes from much further south too, but for sure there must be contamination to a certain extent. We live in an area unaffected by the tsunami or Fukushima physically but its probably impossible to escape the effects completely. I buy local food in season, in winter I often get a Costco delivery from Tokyo, people don't want products from China here after some problems they had with that. But I have read different reports and its hard to see the complete picture.

Its a difficult country to visit on your own, At least Toyko can be overwhelming and confusing. If you've lived in NYC your whole life it might seem a but less intense but there is nothing quite like it. Train signs were translated into western characters for the world cup and it has helped me! Reading Utsukushigaoka in our letters is much easier than sounding it out in Japanese!
